Civil Rights

If you believe your civil rights have been violated, it is important to have an attorney who is well versed and experienced in handling such matters. Civil rights litigation is procedurally demanding, is usually brought in federal court, and is defended aggressively by government entities and their insurers.

Our firm has handled civil rights cases in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Ronald A. Stearney, Jr. was selected by the Chief Judge of the Northern District to assist in drafting the court’s pattern civil rights jury instructions, and later assisted in drafting the Seventh Circuit’s civil rights pattern instructions.

Matters we handle

  • Excessive force and police misconduct
  • False arrest and malicious prosecution
  • Unlawful search and seizure
  • Failure to provide medical care in custody
  • Wrongful conviction and detention
  • First Amendment retaliation

Deadlines matter

Civil rights claims are subject to strict filing deadlines, and some claims against government entities require notice well before a lawsuit is filed. If you believe your rights were violated, contact us promptly so those deadlines can be evaluated.
